A Night Out With Chace Crawford (Artikel New York Times) 10nite600.1

GOSSIP GUY? Chace Crawford (second from left), the “Gossip Girl” star, is settling into his real-life role as a teenage heartthrob, and marveling at the ride.

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz.

THERE was a star in the driveway of the Hyatt Regency here last Saturday night. As guests left the hotel, they stopped and grabbed the arms of friends. Some pulled out cameras and snapped pictures. The object of attention was a sports car that gleamed and looked powerful and expensive.

No one seemed to notice that standing next to the vehicle, admiring it with exclamations of “dude” and “sweet,” was Chace Crawford, the 22-year-old actor who plays the prep-school heartthrob Nate Archibald on “Gossip Girl.”

The car, an Audi R8, was Mr. Crawford’s for the next half-hour as he drove through Paradise Valley on the eve of the Super Bowl. (It was on loan from Audi.)

After a 15-minute drive, during which he fiddled with the car’s controls and got a little lost, Mr. Crawford pulled up to a nine-acre estate that had been transformed into a corporately sponsored invitation-only party spot.

In the driveway, he fielded questions from a television reporter, who asked about his relationship with Carrie Underwood, an “American Idol” winner. “You’re under the assumption that we’re dating now,” Mr. Crawford said with a laugh.

A few minutes later, he sat down to dinner and exchanged perfunctory greetings with LL Cool J, who was seated to his left. It was unclear if either man recognized the other.

Between bites of shrimp and avocado salad, Mr. Crawford marveled about how “Gossip Girl” had transformed him into a latter-day Luke Perry or Rob Lowe. A few weeks ago, Mr. Crawford went home to Dallas and discovered that it had been “a bad idea to go to the mall with my parents” after a gaggle of pre-teenage girls accosted him. Then there were his profiles on Facebook and MySpace. “I had to take them down after a while,” Mr. Crawford said, a result of fans discovering his Web sites.

In the dining room, music executives and Hollywood agents mingled with the likes of Kid Rock and Frank Gifford, the former New York Giant, while Mr. Crawford sipped merlot and looked around uneasily. “I feel like I’m the youngest guy here,” Mr. Crawford said. “I’m a little out of my element.”

So there was relief when the guests were ushered to an outdoor patio, where a dinner given by the actress Kate Hudson was letting out. Mr. Crawford chatted with Audi executives, and exchanged high-fives with his manager, Eric Podwall, when a movie writer told them (prematurely) that the writers’ strike was over.

Just then, Ms. Hudson floated by on three-inch heels, her cashmere shawl nearly brushing Mr. Crawford’s sweater. He looked down, suddenly fascinated by his drink. “I can introduce you if you want,” Mr. Podwall whispered.

Mr. Crawford reddened and shook his head no. But he was escorted by the elbow to Ms. Hudson’s poolside cabana, where the two sat making small talk. A few minutes later, he returned grinning.

Meanwhile, two teenage girls whispered behind his back as one reached out and nearly touched his sweater. Mr. Crawford was too busy raving about Ms. Hudson to notice.

“I loved her in ‘Almost Famous,’ ” he said.
